Samarkand Pottery

Samarkand Pottery is an Australian studio workshop located in Bundook, New South Wales, dedicated to the creation of handcrafted stoneware bonsai pots. Founded and operated by ceramic artists James and Jackie Tranter, the studio has spent over a quarter of a century refining its ceramic mastery, transitioning over the last seven years to specialize exclusively in mid-fired, functional art for the Australian bonsai community.

Combining a rich technical background with the rugged, organic textures of the Mid North Coast hinterland, Samarkand Pottery has become a premier name for collectors seeking unique vessels that respect and complement living trees.

Origins and Philosophy
The journey of Samarkand Pottery spans over 25 years of ceramic practice, but its modern evolution crystallised into a dedicated bonsai pot studio around 2018. Operating out of Bundook—a quiet, heavily forested landscape near Gloucester, NSW—the studio draws direct inspiration from the surrounding Australian bush.

The core philosophy of the studio is synergy: a belief that a bonsai pot should never overpower the tree it holds, but rather feel like an extension of the natural environment. Every single piece is entirely handmade—often thrown on a wheel and then heavily altered, carved, or coloured—ensuring no two creations are identical.

Materiality and Signature Style
Samarkand Pottery is celebrated for its diverse and tactile array of unglazed and wood ash finishes. The studio works extensively with mid-fired (1220˚c), stoneware that can withstand the demanding outdoor environments required by bonsai cultivation.

  • The Finishes: The studio’s signature aesthetic is characterized by raw, rugged textures. Notable styles include their Brown Split Finish, which utilizes dark brown clay subjected to reduction firing to achieve an aged, bark-like appearance, alongside smooth matte blacks and fluid green-grey woodash glazes. More recently a range of beautiful and subtly exotic glazes have been produced
  • Engineering for Trees: Unlike mass-produced planters, Samarkand pots are precision-crafted for plant health. They feature heavy-duty feet, ample drainage configurations, and strategic tie-down wire holes essential for securing delicate root systems.

Community and Contemporary Legacy
Samarkand Pottery has deeply integrated itself into the fabric of regional Australian art and the national bonsai community. Beyond selling pieces across Australia at exhibitions and around the world via Etsy, the Bundook studio acts as an educational hub. The workshop frequently hosts immersive, hands-on classes where groups, such as the Port Stephens, Taree and Hastings Bonsai Clubs, travel to the property to hand-craft their own custom pots.
